Course Overview

The HNC Leadership and Management is a Pearson awarded Level 4 higher education qualification designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for leadership and management roles across a wide range of business sectors. The programme is studied part time over two years and is delivered remotely through an online learning platform. Students are supported by experienced tutors, live online sessions, guided independent study, and access to digital learning resources. The course is aligned with national higher education frameworks and provides a strong foundation for employment or further study.

This course is particularly well suited to individuals who are currently working, aspiring to move into leadership or management roles, or looking to formalise their existing experience with a recognised higher education qualification. Delivered virtually and part time over two years, it is ideal for those who need flexibility to balance study with employment, family, or other commitments. It will appeal to early career professionals seeking progression, team leaders or supervisors aiming to develop their management skills, and career changers looking to move into business or leadership roles. Those who will benefit most from investing their time and money are learners who want to enhance their professional credibility, improve their confidence and effectiveness in the workplace, and create clear progression routes into higher level study or management employment, while studying in a structured and supportive online environment.

Course Requirements

We welcome mature students with relevant experience and/or professional qualifications. Whilst applications are considered on an individual basis, they are usually based on a requirement to have 64 UCAS points from either:

A level 3 vocational qualification, GCE A levels or an Access to Higher Education Diploma

GCSE English Language and Maths at grade C/4 or above. In some circumstances, we can accept Functional Skills Numeracy level 2 instead of GCSE Maths.

What you will Learn

An understanding of how organisations operate is developed through exploring different business structures, internal functions, and the external factors that influence decision making in a changing business environment. Key leadership and management theories and styles are examined, providing insight into how leaders motivate teams, manage performance, and support continuous improvement within organisations.

Core marketing principles are introduced, showing how marketing supports organisational objectives. Practical skills are developed through creating marketing and media plans to promote products or services effectively. The role of human resource management is explored, with a focus on recruiting, developing, and retaining staff. This unit highlights how effective people management contributes to performance, engagement, and organisational success.

A foundation in accounting principles is built by learning how financial information is prepared, analysed, and used to support planning, budgeting, and business decision making. Essential project management skills are developed through planning and managing a small scale business project, strengthening abilities in research, problem solving, time management, and professional communication.

Operational planning and management are explored, focusing on how organisations improve efficiency, quality, and performance through effective operations, supply chains, and continuous improvement practices. The impact of digital technologies on modern organisations is examined, developing digital awareness and practical skills that support business aims and enhance customer engagement.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous and includes a wide range of methods including the development of portfolios, delivery of virtual presentations, design of creative communications, preparations of reports, essays and research projects. You will be expected to complete one or two pieces of assessed work to meet the learning outcomes for each of the eight units at each level of the course.

Progression

Students may progress to our Level 5 HND Leadership and Management (HTQ), which further develops managerial knowledge, decision making, and leadership capability and is aligned to the Occupational Standard for Operations or Departmental Manager.
Following completion of the HND, progression routes typically include Level 6 top up degrees, such as:

– BA (Hons) Business Management
– BA (Hons) Leadership and Management
– BA Business and Human Resource Management
– BSc (Hons) Digital Business Management

The course also provides a strong foundation for progression into professional body qualifications and memberships, including CIM, CMI and CIPD. These professional routes support continuing professional development (CPD) and enhance employability and career progression.

Career Options

Students may choose to progress directly into employment or advance within their current role, moving into positions such as team leader, supervisor, department manager, operations manager, or project coordinator, while continuing to develop professionally through work based learning and CPD.
