Marple Sixth Form College student Sharifah Aljafari has been named a Runner-up in the prestigious Association of Colleges (AoC) Student of the Year Awards.
Sharifah was selected as a finalist in the Student Green Commitment Award category and was then recognised as the Runner-up. A special celebration ceremony is scheduled to take place in March next year.
Sharifah’s recognition comes as a result of her impactful leadership as the leader of Trafford and Stockport College Group’s Green College Assembly.
Her commitment to advancing the wider green agenda has not only raised awareness but also fostered practical action within the college community.
Through her work, Sharifah has developed vital skills in public speaking, collaboration, and environmental advocacy, allowing her to engage with key stakeholders, including college leadership, senior politicians, business leaders, and local communities.
Expressing her feelings on being a finalist, Sharifah said: “I feel surprised but honoured. It’s great to be recognised, but this is a collective effort. It’s encouraging to see our commitment to protecting our planet acknowledged, and I’m proud to represent the hard work of my peers.”
Sharifah’s green journey began when she decided to lead on a variety of activities in line with our UK entry into Planet Earth Games.
Her participation in the Carbon Literacy course ignited her passion for sustainability, giving her hope in the power of small actions to drive meaningful change.
One of her proudest moments was delivering a speech at the launch of the Green Skills Hub and engaging in a productive conversation with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.
Michelle McLaughlin, Head of Personal and Professional Development at Trafford and Stockport College Group commented, “We are incredibly proud of Sharifah’s achievements.
“Her drive, dedication, and ability to inspire others have been invaluable to our college community.
“She is a shining example of what young people can achieve when given the opportunity to lead on important issues like sustainability.”
Sharifah is looking forward to following conversations held at COP29, where she hopes to see key discussions and commitments that align with her vision for a sustainable future.
