Course Overview

Film Studies is designed to deepen students’ understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film, the major art form of the twentieth century, and one developing new modes of expression and exhibition in the twenty-first century. Students will engage with a wide range of different kinds of films, developing transferable skills of observation, critical analysis and personal reflection, as well as developing their creativity and practical skills, either in audio-visual or written form.

You will study Hollywood Cinema, British and Global Cinema, Documentary, Experimental and Silent Cinema, during the course. You also get the chance to practice film-making skills and create your own films or screenplays as part of the assessment.

PLEASE NOTE – YOU MUST APPLY FOR 3 A LEVELS

Standard A Level entry requirements: 5 x GCSE grade 5’s or above (must include Maths and English Language). However, certain subjects may have additional entry criteria, which can be found below:

Additional Entry Requirements:
A Level Art will require grade 5 in GCSE Art or a portfolio.

What you will Learn

The course offers an attractive combination of developing analytical and communication skills, whilst improving academic research techniques and practical skills in Film Production or Screen Writing. Film Studies is a subject that by its nature requires candidates to consider moral, ethical, social, cultural and contemporary issues.

Assessment

Component 1 – exam (35% of total assessment). Component 2 – exam (35% of total assessment). Component 3 – coursework (30% of total).

Progression

You could progress to a related higher education course such as film studies or film production, media, teaching, humanities or social sciences. You could also progress to a range of varied apprenticeships, such as opportunities within BBC TV or Channel 4.

Career Options

Students who study Film Studies at A level can go on to careers like journalism, photographer, producer or film drector, presenter, and more.
